ONLINE QUOTATIONS
Actual translation is only a part of the overall translation process; a large part of the work is taken up with reviewing and revising the translated text. While all translation agencies tend to promise that their translations are reviewed and revised before delivery, the extent to which this process is actually implemented can vary.
This does not necessarily mean that more is better. Reviewing and revision is a time consuming and intensive process and therefore adds to the overall cost of translating your document. Just as in the production of original documents, texts are subjected to differing levels of review according to their intended use and importance (compare an internal memo to a published article or a set of terms and conditions), it is not always appropriate and often excessive, given the extra costs involved, to subject all translations to the most rigorous review process.
While many translation agencies may price their services according to their most rigorous revision process, we think it more appropriate to work on a case-by-case basis, agreeing with the client, according to the intended use and importance of the document to be translated, the required level of review so that we can price the project accordingly. In the majority of cases, this leads to a reduction in costs, which ensuring that critical documents are subjected to more rigorous and comprehensive review.
As a rule, we offer the following different levels of service when it comes to revision and review. We will decide with you which level of service is most appropriate according to the document you need translating and its intended use and readership. The participation of the client in the review process can be extremely constructive, and input from the client can make an important contribution to the success of the final outcome. While it depends on each client's availability, many clients are keen to be actively involved in the revision process, working with our translators and reviewers towards a final version that meets with the approval of all parties, rather than be excluded until final delivery.
Self-review - the lowest cost solution.
The translated text is reviewed and revised by the same translator who performed the translation, checking the translated text and referring to the source text only where potential problems are detected.
Intended for internal, non-critical documents, whose main purpose is general understanding and information. Not suitable for documents intended for publication. Such translations do not generally require extensive review, especially when the content is non-technical, and when the main concern is that the meaning of the original is maintained and understood, allowing a reduction in costs and in the price charged to the client.
Review by second translator - where effective translation is required without excessive additional cost.
Following self-review as above, the translated text is reviewed by a second translator, who will review and revise the text, comparing it throughout to the original text to verify the accuracy of the translation and to ensure compliance with the original.
Intended for more important internal documents and non-critical documents for external use or publication, such as non-technical articles, news stories, corporate blogs etc.
Additional proof reading - where a highly polished text is required.
Following revision by a second translator, the finished text is then sent to an independent proof reader for further review. Focusing on the translated document, the proof reader will check the translation for readability and effectiveness, enhancing and editing the text where necessary. The changes made at the proofreading stage are reviewed by the other translators involved in the translation and review process before implementation. The whole team will consult over the changes made at this stage, before jointly approving the final version of the text.
Suitable for your most critical documents, intended for release to third parties or publication, where the impact of the translation on its readers is key.
Additional technical revision - additional revision for specialist texts.
The translated text is subjected to a thorough review of technical or specialist terms, to ensure strict translation accuracy. All terminology in the source and translated versions are compared and verified by a specialist in the subject matter of the translation. Recommended for specialist texts, such as legal, technical and scientific translations.
